Here is how to setup and use NVidia's nView. But nView adds features that Window's version cannot access, for example, Desktop names are not visible when you use the Window's interface. To be clear, NVidia's implementation works directly with Windows', so adding a new Desktop in either app will make it available in the other app. There are additional features, but these are what I found to be the most important for getting started. It has all the features that are expected to be native to the Windows implementation: easy access to each desktop from the taskbar, custom names for each desktop (and background images), and menu items directly send any window and/or application to a desktop of your choosing by clicking on that window's title bar. What is nView nView coordinates with Windows Virtual Desktops underneath, but is a much better UI. It is not obvious how to run it, how to set it up for use, or how to use it, so here is my synopsis. It was preinstalled on my system, and I knew nothing about it. Until then, if you have NVidia, you can install nView (make sure to choose the version compatible with your hardware - campatability list is on the download page for each version.) PDF documentation link is to the right of the download link for each version.įirst off, it was not even clear to me what nView was.Īnd here nView's links to documentation page. To do this natively in Windows, you need Windows 10 Insider build 18963 or higher, according to this winaero article. Put that in the top left of each Virtual Desktop, and your desktops are (at least to some usable extent) labelled. Open Notepad, save an empty file something like "Desktop Name.txt" and then resize the Notepad window down so you can just see the title bar with the desired name. Why? Without this suggestion if the user uses the Ctrl-Win left/right arrow shortcut there is no visual indication for the user to determine which desktop the user is on.Īlternative way of labeling virtual desktops: similarly toggle a current desktop label visible in the notification area of the taskbar.top left, top center, top right, etc) current desktop label (with adjustable opacity of course) that would display the name of each custom desktop. It's great that Windows has implemented customizable desktop names visible on the Task View display.Īs an aside a suggested improvement to this would be configuration options which allow the user to: They will be moved to the first desktop.Virtual desktop renaming confirmed to exist in Windows 10 Version 2004 (OS Build 19041.450) Please make note that this will not close the programs you have open. You can also close the desktop you are currently in by pressing Windows Key + Ctrl + F4.After a few seconds, a small X will appear in the upper right corner. Open the Task View pane and hover over the desktop you would like to close. You can also do this by pressing the keyboard shortcuts Windows Key + Ctrl + Left Arrow and Windows Key + Ctrl + Right Arrow. When you want to move between each of your desktops, open the Task View pan and click on the desktop you want to move to.You will then see an option that says Move and select the desktop that you would like to move it to. To move a window from one desktop to another, open the Task View pane and then right-click the program you want to move.To open a new desktop quickly, you can press the Windows Key + Ctrl + D.In the Task View pane, click New Desktop to add another desktop. You can also press the Windows Key + Tab.You can click on the Task View button on the task bar. There are multiple ways to get the task view open. This can help you to organize your actions and see multiple things without having to minimize what you are working on. On the next, you can have Excel, PRISM, and Word open. You may want one desktop to keep your email and Skype for Business chat. Using multiple desktops can allow you to better organize your programs and job functions. Task View allows you to see all of the programs that are currently open on your desktop and you will be able to toggle through them. However, this feature also allows you to create additional desktops. When you receive Windows 10, you may notice a new feature on your toolbar.
